What styles of music do you teach? (back to top)
We teach all styles from rock, pop, jazz, country, blues and classical.
Are your instructors qualified? (back to top)
Our teachers have received their education from various prestigious institutions. Many of our instructors have gone on performance tours of the US and Europe and have extensive professional performance and teaching experience. In addition to their teaching credentials, our teachers have warm personalities, are friendly, and strive to get to know each student and their parent on a personal level.
What do you learn in your music lessons? (back to top)
That question is often asked by prospective students. Our teachers make it a priority to get to know you on a personal level and to become familiar with your personal musical needs and goals.
We do not treat every student the same in terms of what and how we teach.
A seven year old having their first guitar lesson will have very different needs than a fifty seven year old taking up piano for the 2nd time after having had lessons as a child.
The main reason to choose Bigel Music as your music lesson provider, is that we are sensitive to the fact that every student is an individual.
If you enroll here for lessons, we will work with you to make a plan that will fit your needs and musical preferences. At the first lesson your teacher will ask you about your favorite type of music, and set goals to help accomplish whatever musical aspirations you have for yourself or your child.
Below Is A General Guideline of What We Teach Our Students for Each Instrument Type
GUITAR, BANJO, MANDOLIN, AND BASS LESSONS
Our guitar teachers teach rock, blues, metal, country and classical guitar lessons on electric and acoustic guitars. Beginner students can expect to work on chords, simple songs and melodies, sight reading and theory. We balance musicianship and fun by making sure that with each lesson you are challenged with a new technical or theory concept, but always end with something fun such as your favorite riff or song. We use a variety of method books to accomplish this and encourage students to bring CDs or their iPod to their lesson to learn their favorite tunes.
PIANO LESSONS
Our piano teachers teach a variety of styles from classical to popular music. Whether you want to learn Bach or Alicia Keys, our teachers are happy to help you become the pianist you want to be. Our piano faculty will show you the fundamentals of sight reading, technique and theory, but they will also incorporate your favorite songs into your lessons. You do not have to have a piano at home to take lessons. A simple full size electronic keyboard with touch sensitivity will suffice for the first 6 months. Our piano teachers have warm personalities and enjoy sharing their love for the piano with you.
VIOLIN, VIOLA LESSONS
Our violin teachers focus primarily on classical style, which is a baseline for learning other styles such as country fiddle and celtic. At Bigel Music we teach both the Suzuki and Classical method and adapt each learning style depending on the student needs and the parent’s request. Our strings faculty will show you how to properly care and maintain your instrument as well as the fundamentals of sight reading, technique and theory. They will also incorporate popular songs and recognizable tunes into your lessons.
DRUM LESSONS
Our drum instructors teach rock, metal, jazz, funk, blues and many other styles. Drum language can be complex and our instructors will challenge any drummer with a wide variety of technical exercises designed to improve your speed and comfort. All drummers bring in their favorite drum parts to learn in their lessons and theory is encouraged. We have many drum students who play in local bands be it in rock clubs or their local churches. You do not have to purchase a drum kit to take lessons. Beginning students can learn with a drum pad and sticks for only $30.00. Students use our drum set at their lessons and do not have to bring anything except their drum sticks and a notebook.
BRASS AND WOODWIND (i.e. trumpet, saxophone) LESSONS
Our brass and woodwind instructors teach a variety of styles including but not limited to classical, pop, and jazz. Our teachers will show you how to properly care and maintain your instrument as well as the fundamentals of sight reading, lip technique (embrochure), breathing exercises, fingering technique and theory. They will also incorporate popular songs and recognizable tunes into your lessons.
VOICE LESSONS
Our voice teachers teach a variety of singing styles. If you have always wanted to be a better rock, pop, country, jazz, gospel or R&B singer, then we have the right voice teachers for you. In our voice lessons, we balance musicianship and fun by doing physical exercises to improve a student’s vocal range, ear training, breath control, vibrato, tone production, enunciation, and by working on something fun such as singing a song from your favorite artist. We can even help singers develop their own unique voice. Our singing lessons will also help students who want to enhance their speaking voices.
Should I do group or private lessons? (back to top)
That depends on your motive. Although it is cheaper to learn in a group, you will progress significantly faster and learn a lot more out from private lessons. In addition, students that sign up for group lessons miss out on the benefit of one-one-one interaction where the instructor can fully focus his/her attention on you and answer all your questions thoroughly. Private music instruction can greatly enhance a student’s ability to play in school band, such as making first chair.
How long will it take to learn how to play an instrument? (back to top)
It all depends on your prior knowledge of music, how often you play, and how good you want to get at playing your instrument.
BOTTOM LINE: If you follow our teachers' programs and play (notice I didn't say practice) for 15-20 minutes a day, 5 days a week, you will be making progress 99% of the time, and will probably be able to play a couple of basic songs within the first month.
What equipment do I need to get started? (back to top)
Usually the main instrument is all you need. For piano, you can get away with a keyboard, preferably touch sensitive. Drums might be a little more involved, although a practice pad can be purchased relatively inexpensively that can get you started doing basics. Other accessories that aren't absolutely necessary, but highly recommended are picks, and tuner (guitar and bass), metronome, music stand, and a book. BIGEL MUSIC offers beginner packages and also allows students to rent equipment at very reasonable rates.
How old does someone have to be to start lessons? (back to top)
It depends on the instrument and the child. Children can start learning to play the piano at 4 or 5. For drums and guitar, generally, 8 years old is a good age where the child has enough attention span and finger coordination to start learning how to play an instrument. For band instruments, children usually start around middle school. Each child has a different learning ability, different attention span, and becomes more adept at fine motor skills at different ages. So there's really no set age that's too young to start learning. If you have a child that’s younger than the recommended ages above, we are glad to offer a free assessment to see what instrument or music program would be most suitable for them to learn.
