HOPELESS ROMANTIC
by Larry Bigel

romantic

About a few weeks ago on a Tuesday afternoon, I had a teenage boy come into the store.  He was wearing a cowboy hat and holding a dozen roses in his hand.  He asked me if I could give these flowers to a student who was supposed to be having her lesson later that afternoon.  I hated seeing the disappointment on his face when I told him that she actually switched her lesson time from Tuesdays to Mondays about a week ago.  His feelings of being distraught started disappearing after deciding he could give the roses to his mother.
So next Monday rolls around and again he shows up at the store with another bouquet in his hand.  This time I have to explain that even though his potential love interest switched her lesson days to Monday, she called in earlier that day to cancel her lesson.  When I told him the story, he started shaking his head in disbelief.  You would think a couple of these mishaps would start to break his spirit? He actually offered the flowers to another teenage girl who happened to be in the store at this time. I gotta admit that I admired his ingenuity of being able to find a practical recipient for his roses in both instances.
Now a couple of weeks pass, and come another Monday I see the same teenage boy come into the store empty handed.  This time, he asks me if “she” is going to be here for lessons later today.  I tell him as far as I know, she should be here. I also told him I didn’t want to make any promises since students have been known to cancel their lessons a few minutes before or not even show up.  So he walks out of the store and a couple of minutes later he returns again with yet another dozen roses in his hand.  He didn’t want to write any notes.  He just told me to tell her that these are from an admirer.  I’m wondering could this be three times a charm.  So later that day, his potential love interest shows up for her lesson.  I hand her the flowers and give her the message.  She just laughs.
At this point, quite a few thoughts are circling in my head.  I’m wondering if she actually knows this kid.  Is she flattered, embarrassed and does she even care about this boy who’s trying to win her love.  I think back to the times when I was a teenager and the antics I used to do in hopes of winning the affection of a girl.  Is he just another hopeless romantic?  If so that’s ok.  We all could use more positive energy in this day and age.  I think of the lyrics of John Lennon “You may say I’m a dreamer.  But I’m not the only one.  I hope someday you’ll join us.  And the world will live as one.”

OPEN JAMS – PLAY WITH PEERS in a CASUAL ENVIRONMENT

The fall is approaching us and the weather should start cooling down in the next couple of weeks. This will be a great time for us to resume hosting some open jams.  You can either play a solo or rock out with other people of similar ages, ability and interest.  We typically hold these events at Brusters in the evening.  It’s a lot of fun and gives students a great opportunity to learn how to play music with other people.  Stay tuned for an upcoming schedule of these jams.
